Diverse Sexualities and Genders

The University of Western Australia is committed to providing leadership and vision in the areas of diverse sexualities and genders (DSG), and we actively support all staff and students who identify as LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex).

UWA recognises that sexuality and gender identity are different, although inter-related, areas. It recognises that gender identity is not a binary construct and that there are many variations along the dimension of human sexuality.

UWA TRACK RECORD AND OUR CURRENT WORK

Parental leave and definitions of family

UWA adopts an inclusive definition of family which encompasses a wide range of relationships: blood, marriage, affinity, adoption, and dependency. Family responsibilities therefore includes care for older people, people with a disability, children, partners, and responsibilities associated with extended families.

Parental leave is accessible to both female and male staff and to staff in same-sex relationships.

GLBT Network

The Equity and Diversity office have established an e-network of where GLBTI identifying staff can share items of interest and caucus around current political and community strategies e.g. marriage equity, further legal recognition. This group will meet twice a year to informally network in a LGBTI-only space. For more information, contact Malcolm Fialho: malcolm.fialho@uwa.edu.au or Adele Tate: adele.tate@uwa.edu.au

ALLY

The ALLY Network is a UWA inititiave that has since been adopted by 17 universities across Australia. It has involved establishing a network of over 250 allies across the University community that can support GLBTI staff and students, build a support and advocacy network, and promote awareness and visibility around these issues. ALLIES are agents of cultural change at the local level, and are identified by this logo around campus:
