The University of WA has responded to legislation incorporating gender identity within the Equal Opportunity Act (1984) by implementing a range of initiatives in the area of sexual and gender diversity.

UWA explicitly recognises that sexuality and gender identity are different, although inter-related, areas. It recognises that gender identity is not a binary construct and that there are many variations along the dimension of human sexuality.

Examples of this recognition include:

~ The Ally Project which has involved establishing a network of over 150 allies across the University community that can support Transgender and Intersex staff and students, build a support and advocacy network and promote awareness and visibility around these issues.

~ Acknowledgement of Transgender and Intersex status on student academic achievement records, personnel data and employee satisfaction surveys.

~ Graduates of this University who have been gender reassigned are entitled under the WA Gender Reassignment Act 2000 to have their degree reissued with the name adopted as their preferred gender. Click here to link~

Promoting awareness of Transgender and Intersex issues through both staff and student fora.

~ Advocacy and support where required to assist Transgender and Intersex staff and students access facilities appropriate to their preferred gender.
